What information does BISL collect?
The website administered by BISL collect the following types of information:
- name and contact information including email address and postal address, date of birth, and vehicle registration number;
- bank account and/or credit/debit card details. Credit/debit card information will be processed by our provider of card payment facilities, Cardnet, and we advise you to read their privacy policy;
- sensitive personal data we require in connection with your insurance such as medical history or criminal convictions, or any other information such as claims or incidents which affect the grant or administration of your insurance policy.
What does BISL do with the information collected?
BISL uses this information to provide you with a better service and for the following reasons:
- for the purpose of insurance administration, grant, renewal and claims handling by the insurer, its agents, reinsurers and intermediaries;
- to verify information which you provide, to conduct any necessary investigations and to prevent fraudulent claims;
- to enable insurers to conduct the searches on the relevant registers such as the Claims and Underwriting Exchange Register and the Theft Register;
- to add such information onto the relevant databases such as the Motor Insurance Database which may be used by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland for the purpose of Electronic Vehicle Licensing or to pass such information to the police;
- to enable searches to be conducted on publicly available registers such as the Electoral Register, County Court Judgements and bankruptcy registers;
- to pass information about you to us (see "What do we do with the information we collect" above); and
- to enable credit reference agencies to conduct any relevant searches.
BISL and the other companies processing your data for the purposes mentioned above may from time to time need to undertake some of the processing in countries outside of the European Economic Area which may not have equivalent laws to protect your personal data. However, BISL takes steps to ensure that your personal data is kept securely and only used for the purposes for which you provided it. We and BISL are joint data controllers for the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998 in respect of any personal data which you supply to us or BISL in connection with Car, Van and Home insurance and our websites. You may request details of personal information which we or BISL hold about you under the Data Protection Act 1998. A small fee will be payable. If you think any information we have about you is incorrect or incomplete, please write to us at the above address. We will correct or update any information as soon as possible.

We may telephone you to provide you with a quotation or to discuss your case further. For mutual security calls are recorded and may be monitored for training purposes. By supplying data to us you will provide information about yourself and others which the Data Protection Act defines as personal data or sensitive personal data.
The data controllers will be yesinsurance Services Limited and BISL Limited. Data will be used by yesinsurance Services Limited and other carefully selected companies for administration, renewal, claims handling, credit checking, marketing and research purposes and will be added to certain databases which may be checked by various organisations including the police. By supplying data you give explicit consent for all the data provided to be used in this way unless you tell us otherwise.
Complaints procedure
We aim to provide a high level of service to all our customers but occasionally things can go wrong, when this happens we will do everything we can to put things right.
If you have a complaint about our service or the administration of your policy, please contact us in the first instance by phoning customer services on 0844 412 2188. We will aim to resolve your complaint over the phone within 24 hours.
If your complaint is not resolved to your satisfaction within 24 hours we will send you a written acknowledgment of your complaint together with the next steps we will be taking to resolve it. Next steps
In the unlikely event that your complaint remains unresolved four weeks after being made, we will send you either our final response or a letter explaining why we are not yet in a position to resolve your complaint and advise you when we will be in contact again.
If after eight weeks of making your complaint we are still not in a position to issue you with our final response we will send you a letter explaining the reason for the delay and advising you of your right to complain to the Financial Ombudsman.
If we cannot resolve your complaint, you may refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months of receiving our final response letter. Complaints which the insurer are required to resolve will be passed on to them by us. We will notify you when we do this. If you are unhappy with the decision you receive you can refer your complaint to the Chief Executive. Full contact details of the insurer’s Chief Executive will be provided by the insurer or are available from us. If the insurer cannot resolve your complaint, you may refer your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months of receiving the insurer’s final response letter. Following the complaints procedure does not affect your rights to take legal proceedings.
