14 May 2008 Big Rise In Thefts Of Catalytic Converters From Cars, Says Insurer
A large increase in thefts of catalytic converters from cars has been reported by insurer yesinsurance.co.uk.
"Catalytic converters are attractive to criminals because they are expensive, easy to access and contain rare metals such as platinum, which have been rocketing in price recently," said Paul Purdy of yesinsurance.co.uk.
"It’s not unusual for a new catalytic converter to cost in the region of £1,000", he said.
Many of the thefts have been from 4x4 vehicles, which make relatively easy targets as there is usually room underneath to access the exhaust system without having to jack the vehicle up.
Thefts are typically undertaken overnight, so drivers often find out in the morning when they go to start their vehicle, says the insurer.
Steps which drivers can take to reduce the likelihood of their converter being targeted include:
- Park in a private garage wherever possible, rather than leaving your vehicle on the road overnight.
- If you do leave the vehicle parked on the road, try to do so in a busy and well-lit area, rather than a secluded back-street.
- Keep an eye open for anyone who appears to be doing work underneath a vehicle - but bear in mind that they could simply be doing innocent repairs.
- Watch out for anyone carrying a catalytic converter down the street, or loading converters into a vehicle.
- Keep the police informed if you see any suspicious activity.
"Whilst car radios can be a popular target for criminals, catalytic converters now appear to be offering greater returns due to their high value and the fact that they are easily accessed," said Paul Purdy.
