04 October 2006 Research says Brits like to say "Yes"

Research conducted among 4,000 people at the end of last month by car insurer, yesinsurance.co.uk, reveals a staggering 68 per cent of Brits have had sex in a car, whilst an overwhelming 81 per cent of couples have set out on the journey of love, but have restrained themselves before going the whole distance.

Perhaps surprisingly, the poll revealed that that the humble Volvo Estate has been voted as the most popular "passion wagon". The research shows that the car - renowned for its reliability on the road and its spacious interior - has lived through more "interpersonal encounters" than any other vehicle.

The online poll, conducted for yesinsurance.co.uk by research company onepoll.com, placed the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van in second place, with the surfers' favourite VW Camper Van in third. The stylish BMW 3 Series Saloon and the old school Ford Escort complete the top five.

More worryingly, both for other road-users and car insurers such as yesinsurance.co.uk, one in 10 have actually engaged in the act whilst driving and a further 51 per cent have engaged in some form of intimacy whilst on the move.

Paul Purdy, spokesman for yesinsurance.co.uk, said: "These results are some of the more surprising from our research into how people use their cars. We would certainly hope that our customers are sensible enough to keep all their attention on the road whilst they're driving.

"We also find it astonishing that, despite being renowned for being a box on wheels, the Volvo Estate still tops the poll as the best in which to engage in these kind of activities. It would seem that space is the most important issue for couples who want to enjoy themselves; this is reinforced by the fact that a Mercedes van and VW camper van come into second and third place."

For nearly half of people a lay-by is the most popular location for loving sessions. Quiet car parks and country lanes are also favoured by couples, as are multi-storey car parks and supermarket car parks.

The research showed that around one in eight people had actually been caught whilst in the act in their vehicle.

Paul Purdy continued: "Over 6% of people have damaged their car whilst engaging in the act, but less than 1% end up making an insurance claim, probably through a combination of the damage being small and the embarrassment of having to explain how it was caused. Rear-view mirrors are the most easily damaged objects, followed by ripped fabric seating.

"The results are one of the more light-hearted parts of a wider project on people's use of cars which yesinsurance.co.uk is currently undertaking in the UK," said Paul Purdy.
