29 July 2009 Car insurance customers advised on caravan safety
Car insurance customers planning to tow a caravan this summer have been given some advice on how to avoid an accident. The Association of British Drivers said good weighting between both vehicles will help to ensure the caravan does not snake - a term used to describe when it swings from side to side on the road.
Paul Biggs of the organisation said a full-laden caravan should not exceed 85 per cent of the weight of the car, but manufacturer usually specify a maximum weight as well.
Heavy items should be placed over and in front of the axle in the caravan, rather than high up or at the back.
It was also suggested that drivers should remember it will take longer to stop when towing.
As such, they should not build up too much speed and follow speed limits for caravans, which are often lower than those for cars.
If snaking does occur, Mr Biggs said people should not accelerate or brake but instead loosen the grip slightly on the steering wheel.
Those who want to prepare and possibly save money on their car insurance this summer may find cheaper cover online.
