24 July 2009 Government may be able to help drivers protect cheap van insurance
Drivers keen to protect their cheap van insurance premiums may agree that more could be done to cut vehicle crime in the UK.HPI made this claim after the government announced it was setting aside extra funding to try and tackle offences in this area.
Instead of £200,000, the Association of Chief Police Officers' Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service is due to receive £300,000 this year.
However, HPI said - although the additional money was welcome - there were other steps the government needed to take to address the problem successfully.
The group suggested it would be able to play a bigger role in tackling vehicle crime if it had access to more information.
Spokesman Alan Bishop stated:"There are certain ... data fields held by VOSA and DVLA that could help HPI prevent advertising scams."
Meanwhile, drivers who make their vehicles harder to steal by fitting alarms and immobilisers may find they qualify for cheaper van insurance.
