24 July 2009 Responding angrily may jeopardise cheap van insurance

DSA: Motorists should let tailgaters pass Drivers who do not want to jeopardise their cheap van insurance premiums may be well advised not to respond in anger to tailgaters, if the comments of one auto group are anything to go by.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, reacting aggressively by slamming brakes on in a bid to get the vehicle behind to back off could prove dangerous.

It stated people should instead try to move over to allow the driver in question to pass.

A representative from the organisation suggested: "Find the earliest opportunity to change lanes in safety and allow the tailgater to get past you and become somebody else's problem."

This comes after recent research revealed the biggest gripe among British motorists was having someone driving too close behind then.

Meanwhile, people may find they can reduce their chances of being involved in an accident - thereby helping to protect their cheap van insurance - by avoiding confrontation on the road.
