22 July 2009 Van insurance customers may welcome government pledge
A pledge by the government to continue its fight against vehicle crime may be welcomed by drivers keen to protect their cheap van insurance premiums.The Home Office has announced it is increasing the money to be made available to a police organisation set up to tackle this area of illegal activity.
Some £300,000 is to be set aside for the Association of Chief Police Officers' Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS).
The government explained it was keen to do this to try and build on its success over recent years in cracking down on crooks making money out of innocent motorists.
It pointed out that since 1994, illegal auto activity in the UK has been cut by 65 per cent.
Commenting on the extra money being made available, head of AVCIS Mark Hooper said: "This funding contribution will ensure that we can continue work with our partners to target criminal activity and drive down vehicle-enabled crime."
