21 July 2009 Drivers may benefit from thinking about cloning before car insurance

Car buyers warned about cloned vehicles Before auto buyers start thinking about where they can find the best deal on cheap comprehensive car insurance, they may want to ensure the used auto they are purchasing is legitimate, if the comments of one industry group are anything to go by.

Vehicle information firm HPI has warned that people who are not cautious could fall victim to cloning.

This practice involves fraudsters selling on stolen second-hand autos that have had their identities changed to match one of a legal car.

Criminals are able to catch unsuspecting motorists out in this way by using illegally obtained DVLA V5s.

However, HPI director Nick Lindsay explained there were steps drivers could take to protect themselves.

"Simply paying for the car through the banking system could outsmart a criminal," he said.

Generally, crooks would rather let a sale fall through than accept a payment that could leave a trail for the police, Mr Lindsay added.
