16 July 2009 Preparation could prevent a car insurance claim this summer

Motorists gearing up for a summer break have been advised to take time to prepare before they hit the roads - or risk facing the prospect of a claim on their car insurance.

According to the Retail Motor Industry Federation, the majority of vehicles spend the winter months being used for trips to the shops and other short journeys.

This means the hot summer weather and long motorway drives can put quite a strain on cars that have not been properly looked after.

In order to reduce the risk of a claim on their car insurance and ensure a smooth ride, the organisation is therefore urging drivers to carry out checks on engines and cooling systems before they set off.

Meanwhile, drivers should also inspect the pressure and tread depth of their tyres and make sure screen wash is topped up to avoid any problems, it advised.

Those looking to take extra steps to stay safe over the summer may pay a trip to their nearest Citroen dealership after the company landed the title of Best Vehicle Manufacturer at the 2009 Brake Fleet Safety Forum Awards.
