09 July 2009 Driving on auto-pilot 'could jeopardise cheap car insurance'

Drivers urged to focus on the road Motorists could be jeopardising their cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums by driving in a kind of auto-pilot state of mind, if new research is anything to go by.

A study by Continental Tyres found more than half of people complete familiar journeys without really concentrating.

The survey of some 4,000 individuals also revealed 59 per cent of motorists often forget sections of their journeys and 60 per cent drift off into their own little worlds while behind the wheel.

Guy Frobisher from Continental Tyres suggested drivers should make an effort to focus on what's going on around them and avoid carrying out other activities while on the road.

He stated: "Driving is no time for multi-tasking. Our advice is to avoid distractions like eating or drinking or making a phone call, even if hands-free."

Meanwhile, motorists who are involved in a collision while trying to multi-task may find their car insurance provider is reluctant to pay out.
