08 July 2009 A better test 'could lead to cheaper car insurance'

Biba: Driving test should be revised Changing the practical driving test could eventually help reduce the cost of comprehensive car insurance for young motorists, it has been suggested.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), if the way people were taught focused more on safety, providers may start viewing novices behind the wheel as a lower risk.

Corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said: "We believe there should be a reform of the driving test so that young people have a more relevant test - with tests for hazard perception, situational judgement and attitudinal awareness."

The group's representative pointed out the Pass Plus qualification covers exactly these sorts of areas and motorists who successfully complete it can see the cost of cover drop by around 30 per cent.

Figures provided by Biba suggest the average 18-year-old currently pays three times as much for cover as someone aged 50.

Meanwhile, youngsters looking for the best possible deal on comprehensive car insurance may find some of the cheapest offers are available online.
