07 July 2009 Home insurance may have been affected by burglar
The family burgled by a thief who used a pitchfork to break in may be glad if they took out enough home insurance.Frederick Wright, 38, illegally entered a home in Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent earlier this year, the area's crown court heard.
According to local newspaper the Sentinel, he stole two televisions, two digital cameras and a laptop.
Mr Wright told police he spotted the pitchfork next to the property and smashed the patio window to get in.
He said he was trying to find a way to escape the area and its drug problems.
But Judge Paul Glenn, who jailed the accused for 2.5 years, said the property stolen had "a resale value".
"It was not spontaneous. You were looking for somewhere to break into," he added.
According to the newspaper, the mum and son who live in the house were very upset by the incident and are scared to stay there alone.
In addition to taking out home insurance, consumers may want to minimise the chance of a burglar getting in by making certain all keys are out of view and all windows are locked securely.
