06 July 2009 Skimping on maintenance 'can invalidate car insurance'

Biba: Motorists risk invalidating their car insurance if they skimp on maintenance Motorists who want to protect their cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums may do well to keep up with vehicle maintenance, despite the economic downturn, it has been suggested.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association acknowledged some drivers are keen to reduce running costs in the face of the recession.

However, it stated servicing and repairs are not something people can afford to sacrifice.

It explained if motorists do not ensure their autos are in good condition, insurance providers may refuse to pay out in the event of a collision.

The group pointed out all vehicles must have an up-to-date MOT certificate and it is also important tyres are well maintained.

Steve Foulsham, technical services manager with the organisation, said: "If you were to have a claim, if your tyres were illegal, then technically that could nullify your insurance."

Regular servicing could also reduce a motorist's chances of being involved in an accident in the first place, thereby helping them to protect their cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums.
