30 June 2009 Residents urged to secure doors and windows
A number of residents in Greater Manchester may be looking at making home insurance claims after a recent spate of burglaries in the region.Officers have revealed there were seven break-ins in Bury over the weekend, during which criminals gained access to properties through insecure windows or doors.
Commenting on the incidents, Chief Inspector Sean Hogan suggested there were lessons to be learnt.
He stated: "I cannot stress how important it is that residents secure their doors and windows, especially during the summer months."
Greater Manchester Police pointed out a third of all burglaries do not involve forced entry.
During one of the recent incidents in Bury, thieves found a key hidden in an open porch and once inside the house they stole a wallet and a laptop.
Meanwhile, residents keen to protect their cheap home insurance premiums may find installing and using a burglar alarm is an effective deterrent.
