25 June 2009 More money handed out to prevent flooding

New flood grants being handed out Householders concerned they could face making a claim on their home insurance as the result of flooding may welcome news from the government.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn has announced the latest grants to help individuals protect their properties from such natural disasters are starting to be dished out.

He acknowledged it was not possible to control Mother Nature, adding "that's why we're helping households across England to become more resilient to floods by protecting their homes from the damage and destruction that can be caused".

The government agreed to provide £5 million in grants in response to Sir Michael Pitt's review of the events of 2007.

According to the Environment Agency, the money should benefit thousands of people because it will make it possible to install flood protection measures such as door boards and air brick covers.

Individuals who make use of such preventative devices may find they are less likely to have to make a claim and are in a better position to protect their cheap home insurance premiums.
