Householders who want to protect their cheap home insurance premiums may want to take on board advice from Greater Manchester Police.

The force has warned residents in the county to be on their guard against bogus officials.

It issued this statement in response to a number of instances where thieves posed at representatives from the water board or council.

Spokesperson Rachel O'Brien commented: "We are determined to stop this type of crime and are advising people to lock, stop, chain and check before they let anybody they do not know into their home."

If in doubt, residents should keep strangers out, she added.

Officers have warned there may be a rise in the number of criminals posing as gardeners as the weather improves.

Meanwhile, people worried they will lose access to cheap home insurance if they are burgled may find an alarm is an effective deterrent.

Locking windows and doors in unoccupied rooms may also reduce residents' chances of falling victim to thieves.
