According to moneysupermarket.com, the cost of policies to protect these types of green vehicle is about the same as the price of cover for standard models.

Meanwhile, the website also pointed out people opting for hybrid and battery-powered cars are likely to save money in other areas.

It explained there are certain tax benefits to owning environmentally-friendly autos.

The company highlighted the fact vehicle excise duty is generally lower for such models, with some cars being completely exempt.

Recent research by moneysupermarket.com revealed 39 per cent of British drivers are keen to trade in their current vehicle for an electric or hybrid auto.

Spokesman Steve Sweeney commented: "It is encouraging to see so many motorists are conscious of their carbon footprint and are looking for ways to make a difference."
