18 June 2009 Basic maintenance may protect a driver's no-claims bonus
Youngsters keen to see the cost of their comprehensive car insurance premiums fall may be well advised to start paying more attention to vehicle maintenance, if the comments of one company are anything to go by.Auto care firm Comma has warned that teenagers and those in their early 20s may end up having to shell out for major repair bills because of a lack of knowledge when it comes to looking after motors properly.
It made this claim after the Driving Standards Agency revealed 13 per cent of people fail the Show Me, Tell Me section of the practical test.
This part of the assessment focuses on a participants' awareness of vehicle maintenance.
Referring to young motorists, Comma spokesman Mike Bewsey said: "They are perhaps the first generation of drivers who don't have the benefit of parents who would do the basics to their car, like checking oil, religiously."
Meanwhile, people who fail to conduct routine maintenance may find their autos are more likely to develop the kind of fault that could lead to an accident.
As a result, they could be risking the no-claims bonus on their comprehensive car insurance.
