Drivers keen to protect their cheap comprehensivecar insurance cover have been urged to take advantage of free dipstick tests.

Carcraft is offering the complimentary examinations to mark National Oil Check Week – which runs from June 15th to 19th.

It explained this is not an area of vehicle maintenance motorists can afford to neglect.

Group service manager Joe Conlin stated: "It's essential your car has sufficient oil if you want to avoid a hefty and unnecessary repair bill."

This comes after a survey by Comma revealed 50 per cent of motorists do not check levels of this vital fluid.

In addition, the poll found one in 20 auto owners have no idea what a dipstick is.

However, the firm warned the kind of faults caused by failing to keep oil topped up generally cost more than £1,400 to fix.

Meanwhile, people driving around in vehicles with mechanical problems could be increasing their chances of being involved in an accident, thereby jeopardising their cheap comprehensive car insurance premiums.
