12 June 2009 Cheap car insurance 'should be available for youngsters'

ABD: Cheap cover should be available for responsible youngsters There should be ways available for younger motorists to secure cheap comprehensive car insurance, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Drivers (ABD), it is a good idea to put incentives in place to encourage novices behind the wheel to undertake additional training.

The group stated inexperienced motorists who complete an advanced course should benefit from cheaper cover.

However, it suggested there should be other rewards on offer as well.

ABD founding member Hugh Bladon commented: "If the government were sensible, they would give people plus points instead of minus if they've passed some sort of accredited improvement course."

He explained that encouraging more motorists to take advanced training would make the roads safer for everyone.

Mr Bladon added young people can be over-confident when they first pass their test and some do not appreciate the potential consequences of making a mistake at the wheel.

The ABD representative suggested extra education could help remedy this.
