10 June 2009 Third party insurance customers 'should look after their engines'
Motorists with third party car insurance who realise an accident could cost them dear may be well advised to look after their auto's engine.According to vehicle care company Comma, too many people are neglecting basic maintenance such as oil checks.
Research by the firm found five million drivers never get under the bonnet to conduct a dipstick test.
Owners of Seat models were revealed to be the most neglectful, with 71.4 per cent admitting they do not check their oil as often as they should.
Comma recommends motorists should carry out a dipstick test at least once a month.
It warned people who fail to carry out this kind of maintenance could end up facing a hefty repair bill, adding the average cost to fix an engine is £1,413.
However, if neglect leads to the kind of fault that could cause an accident, motorists with third party insurance may be required to shell out even more money.
