04 June 2009 Police may need more van insurance after new vehicles announced
Van insurance might be the next item on the agenda for Northumbria Police, as officers will now be able to use Peugeot Boxers. The vans have been agreed for use when law enforcement is on crowd-control duty.
Reinforced bodywork, tyres and glass are some features of the vehicles that will help the force deal with these types of situation.
Each van will available on standby 24 hours a day and will carry special equipment such as helmets, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and protective shields.
Northumbria Police fleet manager Keith Wilson said the Boxer's ability to carry lots of items was one of the reasons why it was chosen, as well as its availability.
"These vehicles frequently operate fully laden and carry nine police officers, so it's important that they are comfortable to travel in and handle safely on the road," he added.
Other commercial vehicles in the Peugeot range include the Bipper and Partner.
