02 June 2009 Outright ban on mobile use 'not necessary'

ABD: Using a mobile on the road is not always dangerous Motorists should not necessarily be faced with higher car insurance premiums because they have been caught talking or texting on a handheld mobile behind the wheel, it has been suggested.

According to the Association of British Drivers, there is no need for an outright ban on using a phone on the road.

It explained if someone is at a standstill on the motorway because of an accident up ahead, they should not get into trouble for calling a loved one to let them know they are safe.

On the other hand, the group pointed out doing this while on the move is another matter entirely.

The organisation found it particularly worrying that people would try to text while in control of a vehicle.

Founder member Hugh Bladon said: "How anybody can do that while driving is totally beyond our comprehension."

However, regardless of a motorist's personal opinion on the matter, it is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone at any time when behind the wheel.

People who are caught doing so could see the cost of their comprehensive or third party insurance increase significantly.
