01 June 2009 Drink-driving could be a costly mistake
Motorists who have built up an excellent no-claims bonus may do well to follow government advice if they want to protect their cheap comprehensivecar insurance cover. The Department for Transport reminded Brits of the potentially tragic consequences getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol can have, as it launched a campaign designed to tackle the increase in such offences sometimes experienced during the warmer months of the year.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick stated: "Drink-driving is not just a problem at Christmas - each summer almost 200 people don't make it home to their families because of drink-driving."
He added if motorists end up having a glass of wine or a couple of beers when they were not planning to, they should make alternative arrangements to get home.
Mr Fitzpatrick suggested anyone who has consumed alcohol should take public transport or jump into a taxi.
People with a drink-driving conviction may see the cost of their car insurance rise significantly.
