29 May 2009 Supply of electric cars 'may not meet demand'
People who thought the next car insurance policy they secure would be for an electric vehicle may be disappointed, according to a new report. The RAC Foundation has claimed manufacturers may not be in a position to meet demand for battery-operated models in the coming years.
It explained, although the government recently announced it would be offering electric car grants from 2011, the country's leaders have acknowledged such vehicles are unlikely to be an option for the majority of drivers until 2017.
This comes as a survey from the RAC Foundation revealed 6.75 million motorists in the UK could see themselves buying a battery-operated auto in the next five years.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the group, said the government could end up disappointing a significant number of motorists.
"It is actively promoting the purchase of electric vehicles long before there is any chance of manufacturers making them widely available," he added.
Meanwhile, motorists who have already bought this type of environmentally-friendly auto may be able to secure cheap car insurance online.
