It issued this statement in response to the growing number of people buying tyres online.

The group pointed out some motorists were picking a product with the wrong speed symbol in order to save money.

However, it warned going for a figure under the recommended level could affect a vehicle's handling and lead to an accident.

Chairman Stuart Jackson commented: "While many motorists may be feeling the pinch in the current economic climate, we would encourage them not to compromise on road safety."
