28 May 2009 Van insurance customers 'should choose correct tyres'
Car and van insurance policyholders should ensure they buy the right tyres, it has been warned.TyreSafe said due to the fact that it is now much more common to purchase car parts online, some motorists may be inadvertently ordering the wrong kind.
The company said some people are choosing tyres with a lower speed symbol than they need, picking the wrong load index or the incorrect size.
Stuart Jackson is chairman of the organisation and said although buying via the internet can be less expensive, safety should not be compromised.
"Driving on tyres with a lower speed symbol than recommended may seriously compromise vehicle handling, putting the driver and other road users at risk," he explained.
Mr Jackson also said exaggerated wear or sidewall cracking could be caused.
The speed symbol of a tyre can be found after the load index on its sidewall. It is denoted by a letter.
According to the company, tyre pressure should be checked once a month. Motorists should also inspect this part of their van or car for stones and bumps.
