26 May 2009 Families 'need to take stress out of car journeys'
Parents who realise that losing access to cheap comprehensive car insurance could be the least of their worries in the event of a collision have been urged to try and take the stress out of family trips. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) pointed out arguments among relatives can be extremely distracting for the person behind the wheel.
It warned if a motorist loses concentration even for a split second it could lead to a crash.
The organisation cited figures that showed 3,000 reported accidents in 2007 were at least partly the result of the driver being distracted by someone or something in the car.
Rospa suggested explaining to kids the potential consequences of rowing on the road could be useful.
Spokesman Kevin Clinton stated: "Make the most of the opportunity to help your children learn about road safety."
In other news, the group recently launched a Young Drivers Assessment programme to try and tackle the high number of accidents involving motorists aged between 17 and 24.
