22 May 2009 Police crack down on rogue drivers

Police pull over four motorists using mobiles at the wheel A number of motorists in Oxfordshire may struggle to secure cheap car insurance in the future after a recent police campaign.

Four drivers were stopped for using their mobile phones at the wheel.

People who are convicted of this offence can see their comprehensive car insurance premiums rise significantly, with some providers reluctant to provide cover at all.

During the recent operation by Thames Valley Police, motorists were also pulled over for failing to wear a seatbelt and speeding.

The driver who was found to be travelling the quickest was recorded doing 50 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Commenting on the initiative, PC Mark Pilling stated: "This latest round of checks shows that motorists continue to ignore road safety laws in place for their own and others safety."

The recent police initiative in the area is part of the force's Operation Pride.

PC Pilling said the campaign of enforcement would continue until officers were convinced they had got their road safety message across.
