22 May 2009 Police focus on uninsured drivers
Tayside Police have launched a campaign against uninsured drivers in Dundee.By making use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), the force will be able to check up to 3,600 registrations each hour.
Sergeant Malcolm Harvey stated: "ANPR is an effective roads policing and crime reduction tool that is capable of identifying vehicles of interest, regardless of traffic speeds, weather or lighting conditions."
Once officers clock a registration plate the details are compared against information held on a number of databases.
In addition to catching out drivers without car insurance, the system can also help police identify vehicles that have been used in previous crimes and drivers who do not have road tax.
Meanwhile, the force recently launched another campaign that may affect motorists.
In partnership with the British Oil Security Syndicate, officers are running a Forecourt Watch initiative across Perth to try and stop individuals making off without paying for fuel.
