20 May 2009 Police urge motorists to be more security-conscious

Drivers urged to remove valuables from sight Motorists keen to avoid a claim on their van insurance may do well to heed advice from West Yorkshire Police.

Officers in Bradford have urged drivers not to make life easy for thieves.

It was suggested people should remove all valuables from vehicles when leaving them unattended - or at least make sure they are not visible to criminals.

People were also encouraged to wipe away satnav marks - as if thieves believe there could be a unit hidden away in the glove box, they may be more tempted to break in.

The force issued this appeal after arresting a man suspected of going equipped to steal from vehicles.

Sergeant Andy Berriman said: "If you leave items on display, there are opportunists out looking into your vehicle for items to steal."

Drivers who have to make a claim because their LCV is targeted by thieves may subsequently struggle to find a cheap van insurance deal.
