20 May 2009 Eco-friendly tips could help cut insurance costs

Kia: More kids should be walking to school Following the advice of one manufacturer on how people can minimise their impact on the environment could also help drivers reduce the cost of their comprehensive car insurance.

Kia has appealed to motorists to consider leaving their wheels at home during the school run.

The company said doing this would help the planet and the health of the nation's kids.

Drivers who follow this advice may also find they qualify for cheaper insurance, as premiums are calculated based on how far the holder travels each year.

Sue Mulcaster from Kia said: "Walking short journeys rather than taking the car carries health benefits for us and the environment."

The company issued this appeal after research revealed 63 per cent of kids in the UK are driven to school - despite the fact 78 per cent live less than two miles away from where they attend lessons.

Some 28 per cent of parents who take their children in the car said they were concerned about stories of youngsters going missing.
