18 May 2009 Tyre checks could 'prevent a breakdown'
People who do not want to end up relying on the breakdown cover that came with their car insurance may do well to check their tyres before long journeys.According to ATS Euromaster, if a vehicle does not have the right amount of air in its tyres it is more likely to experience a puncture.
Handling and stopping distances could also be negatively affected, the firm pointed out.
Motorists were also reminded tyre pressure needs to be adjusted depending on the load being carried.
It explained a car weighed down with the whole family and lots of baggage will require more air than those that are practically empty.
The different load-related figures can be found in a vehicle's handbook.
Commenting on the need to adjust tyre pressure, Chris Hufflet from ATS Euromaster said: "It's a simple five minute job, but from our experience, the majority of drivers don't bother."
Taking a car to be serviced before a long trip may also reduce the likelihood of having to rely on breakdown cover.
