14 May 2009 Residents urged to be suspicious of strangers
People who want to protect their cheap home insurance premiums should be wary about strangers who turn up on their doorstep, it has been claimed.Thames Valley Police issued this warning after criminals posing as workmen carried out a number of distraction burglaries in the area.
PC Richard Josey said when people turn up unannounced it is important to check their ID and gain further verification of who they are if necessary.
He stated: "We urge people to be vigilant when it comes to home security."
This comes after crooks stole over £600 from a 90-year-old woman in Oxford.
After convincing the victim they were workmen employed to fix a broken sewage pipe, the two burglars told the woman to get together all of her cash as some of their colleagues could not be trusted.
The men then stole this money from the pensioner themselves, before making off.
Ensuring all valuables are covered under a home contents insurance policy may provide some peace of mind to those concerned about the possibility of being burgled.
