It is important to bear in mind overall costs when purchasing comprehensive car insurance, it has been claimed.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association pointed out a cheap policy that requires add-ons further down the line may not end up being a bargain after all.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive, suggested motorists should be thinking to themselves: "Ok, if I know it's going to cost fifty pounds extra if I go to France then I will bear that in mind when I get the quotes in the first instance."

Motorists going overseas with their car may also want to check their comprehensive cover does not become third party on leaving British soil.
