11 May 2009 Drivers 'should not make life easy for thieves

Police advise valuables should be removed from unattended cars Motorists who want to avoid a claim on their comprehensive car insurance may do well to take on board advice from Tayside Police.

Officers from the force have claimed unattended vehicles with items left on display are at a higher risk of being targeted by thieves.

They said by removing valuables and making use of security features such as alarms and immobilisers, car owners can reduce the likelihood of having to sort out repairs after a break-in.

Satnavs are particularly attractive to crooks - and motorists should ensure they remove such devices, along with accompanying cradles, Tayside Police added.

This advice was issued in light of the fact 22 vehicles have been broken into across Dundee since the beginning of the month.

"Valuables should be treated as such and be kept safe, preferably taken out of the vehicle when it is unoccupied," officers stated.

Meanwhile, equipping a car with security devices such as alarms and immobilisers may result in cheaper comprehensive car insurance.
