06 May 2009 Parking illegally could be money down the drain
Motorists who always search for the cheapest comprehensive car insurance could waste any savings made if they park illegally, it has been suggested. From next month, English local authorities will be able to issue penalty charge notices to people who double-park their autos or leave them next to dropped kerbs.
Drivers may also want to bear in mind they will not be excused for the offence just because there are no signs or road markings advising of the restrictions.
Transport minister Paul Clark explained it clearly states in the Highway Code that motorists cannot park in such spots.
"Dropped kerbs are there to help wheelchair users and those with powered mobility vehicles or prams get around easily and safely," he stated.
Mr Clark added double parking creates an obstruction that poses a risk to other road users and can cause accidents.
Earlier this month, the Department for Transport warned against texting at the wheel.
