06 May 2009 Beat burglars 'with common sense'
Burglars can be beaten with common sense according to one home insurance expert, which has published a list of handy hints for stopping would-be thieves in their tracks.Writing in Canadian newspaper the National Post, Mike Holmes said that taking common sense steps such as remembering to lock doors and windows is one of the key steps in preventing burglaries.
He added that adding peepholes to doors and installing good exterior lighting can help, as can ensuring that mail and newspapers are taken inside if you are going to go on holiday so as not to advertise your absence to criminals.
Mr Holmes claimed: "Home security doesn't have to be high tech. Burglars can be discouraged [ ] by noise that might draw attention to them and by lights that reveal what they're doing."
A recent study by Abbey revealed that the number of domestic burglaries in the UK is likely to rise during the recession, as poverty pushes people to take desperate measures.
