05 May 2009 Brits warned not to text and drive

Motorists warned against texting and driving Motorists could have more to worry about than their comprehensive car insurance premiums going up if they text behind the wheel, it has been suggested.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said mobile phones and driving do not mix.

The MP made this comment as he announced a new Think! campaign warning motorists about the dangers of trying to send messages while in control of a vehicle.

He stated: "It doesn't matter how good a driver you are, if you text while driving then you cannot be giving the road your full attention."

The latest government initiative includes a radio advert and an online game showing just how distracting it is to use a mobile behind the wheel.

Earlier research found 30 per cent of young motorists have sent a text message while driving.

Meanwhile, people who are caught using a handset while in control of a vehicle may end up having to shell out more for comprehensive car insurance.
