30 April 2009 'Always use an accurate tyre pressure gauge'
Motorbike riders have been advised to ensure their tyre pressure gauge is accurate - a tip that is also handy for car owners. With the bank holiday weekend approaching, Avon Tyres said checking this part of a vehicle should be a priority.
According to the organisation's motorcycle tyres technical product manager Peter McNally, gauges provided on the forecourts of petrol stations could be wrong "by several" pounds per square inch.
He advised a weekly check to make certain the pressure is correct and this could also highlight other potential areas in need of repair.
"We have seen how under-pressure tyres can degrade handling, affect steering, as well as leading to increased and un-even tyre wear," Mr McNally added.
The expert may have been referring to motorbikes, but car tyre pressure can cause fuel wastage if it is below the right amount.
Car insurance customers unsure of how to check theirs can ask a mechanic.
