30 April 2009 Bumpers damaged as 6 ft pothole appears in road

The hole appeared in Manchester A giant pothole that suddenly appeared in a Manchester road yesterday (April 29th) has caused two cars to damage their bumpers.

Onlookers told a local paper that other vehicles escaped facing serious repair bills and the ground cracked after a bus travelled over it.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the 48 sq ft opening had started to sag and then finally collapsed. It is six ft deep.

A police representative said: "At 13.40 BST we received a report from a business based on Barlow Moor Road that a large hole had appeared in the road."

Nobody was injured but the drivers of the damaged autos may be claiming on their car insurance.

The news was followed today by an announcement from the Institute of Advanced Motorists, which warned people about the potential dangers of potholes.

It said the amount of these hazards had gone up by a third and with more people travelling over the bank holiday there may be many road users being caught out.
