23 April 2009 Bangers for cash may appeal to women drivers
Female motorists may find they can finally afford to get rid of their old bangers as a result of the new vehicle scrappage incentive scheme. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders predicted the programme - announced by Alistair Darling in this week's Budget - would prove a big hit with drivers.
Under the initiative, people who own vehicles that are more than ten years old will be eligible for £2,000 towards a new model if they are prepared to get their old car scrapped.
However, one of the conditions of eligibility is that people must have been in possession of the ageing auto they intend to get rid of for at least 12 months.
The programme is due to be introduced next month.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The scheme recognises the economic value of the motor industry and we are determined to make it a success."
Women who decide to take part in the initiative may find they can save even more money by making sure they search out the best deal on specialist female car insurance.
