The Ford Fiesta is currently the best small diesel on the market, according to a motoring publication.

Speaking as the car was named Car of the Year by What Diesel magazine, editor Ian Robertson said the vehicle is well-built, solid and excellent to drive.

The Fiesta beat 26 competitors to win the title.

Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp said such an endorsement was "great".

"We're delighted with the market's response," he added. "There's no doubt new Fiesta is already a great success."

The car was the recipient of another industry prize recently.

Last month, it picked up the red dot award for international product design, after an independent jury assessed it for features including functionality, design, quality and innovation.

Martin Smith is executive design director at Ford of Europe and said the result was "encouraging" because it showed customers want what the car can give - style and quality.
