21 April 2009 Drivers may be throwing away cheap car insurance savings

Motorists urged to check oil People who buy vehicles and spend time searching for cheap comprehensive car insurance may waste any savings made if they fail to check their oil level regularly, it has been suggested.

According to automobile care firm Comma, too many motorists are neglecting this important part of basic maintenance.

It pointed out that with average engine repair bills currently standing at £1,413 - this could be a costly mistake.

A survey by Comma revealed 17 per cent of vehicle owners never lift the bonnet to check the oil level, with one in twenty admitting they would not know where to start.

Sales and marketing director Mike Bewsey said: "When we're all watching the pennies, it's daft that we don't take better care of one of the most expensive items we own."

A previous study by Comma found three-quarters of UK motorists were risking mechanical problems by waiting until the warning light on the dashboard came on to top up their oil.
