20 April 2009 Police in Manchester checking van insurance policies

Police in Greater Manchester to check van insurance policies Light commercial vehicle drivers in the Greater Manchester area may find they are stopped by police officers who want to check their van insurance policies.

The force announced it would be taking this step in a bid to crack down on individuals who are transporting off-road bikes and scooters when they do not have the necessary cover to do so.

It explained this was in response to complaints from Crankwood residents in Leigh about individuals riding motorcycles illegally on the site of an old tip.

Officers revealed bikers were coming in vans from as far afield as Liverpool to ride in the area.

Residents have voiced concern about excessive noise and mess left by these individuals.

Inspector Ian Kennedy commented: "My officers will continue to work with both the council and site owners Peel Holdings to stop the illegal use of off-road vehicles."

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police recently handed out more than 30 tickets in one day to drivers in Rochdale caught entering restricted areas.
