20 April 2009 Government plans 'may not stop uninsured drivers'

IAM: Government proposals will benefit honest motorists New proposals from the government may not stop drivers who deliberately take to the road without comprehensive or third party insurance, it has been suggested.

The Department for Transport intends to introduce a system where all vehicle owners are sent DVLA reminders when their policy is due to be renewed.

People who fail to act after receiving the letter will then receive an automatic fine.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists claimed the measures would be useful in reminding drivers who genuinely forget their cover is about to expire.

However, it claimed people determined to break the rules of the road would probably carry on getting behind the wheel without insurance.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said: "Those who deliberately flout the law are unlikely to be phased by the new proposals as they will continue to find ways to work the system."

Meanwhile, motorists who buy cheap second-hand cars may find third party insurance is more cost-effective than a comprehensive policy.
