17 April 2009 Proposals could target drivers without car insurance
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has announced its support for government proposals that will see drivers without car insurance fined instantly.According to the organisation, the plans will help highlight those who ignore the law, which will require drivers to be continuously insured whether their vehicle is kept and used or not.
However, the system will only be effective if the databases used to store people's information are reliable, the group said.
"It would be unfair for a motorist to receive a fine if the database is incorrect," remarked IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger. "It's worth remembering that a crash involving an uninsured driver is particularly fraught."
He also described illegal motorists as a "threat" to other users of the road.
Those who need to renew or update their car insurance may find the information they need online, although people who have been given penalty points are likely to see their premiums increased.
