17 April 2009 Repairing pothole damage 'can cost thousands'

Repairing damage caused to a car by a pothole can run into the thousands, a campaign group has announced.

Potholes.co.uk claimed an Essex council had not fixed some of the craters on a road in the area because it viewed them as "traffic calming measures".

The website's spokesperson Duncan McClure Fisher said this was "unbelievable" because potholes present a hazard to motorists.

"Drivers in the area would be exposed to dangerous driving conditions," he opined. "Cyclists and motorcyclists would be particularly at risk."

Essex county council's cabinet minister for highways and transportation Norman Hume said its method of filling in potholes when possible would continue.

Those concerned about potholes may be wise to check their car insurance policy and see if it is suitable for their needs. Checking online for a more competitive deal can sometimes highlight better offers that are more suitable.

According to Potholes.co.uk, the average repair bill for the damage cause by them is £240.
