Electric cars may be subsidised Between £2,000 and £5,000 worth of help will be given to motorists to help pay for their electric cars, a new government announcement detailed today (April 16th).

Business secretary Peter Mandelson and transport secretary Geoff Hoon revealed the scheme today as part of a strategy to increase the use of ultra low-carbon transport.

They expect plug-in hybrids and electric cars to be available in UK showrooms from 2011.

Mr Hoon said a key part of combating climate change was cutting the amount of carbon emissions produced via road transport.

"Less than 0.1 per cent of the UK's 26 million cars are electric, so there is a huge untapped potential to reduce emissions," he added.

Also involved in the scheme is £20 million in funding for charging stations and infrastructure to help create "electric car cities".

After today's announcement, smart issued a statement detailing the environmental benefits of its ed electric vehicle.

Two of these are the car's exemption from vehicle excise duty and the congestion charge.
