09 April 2009 Police campaign cuts burglary rates in Oldham
A recent initiative in Oldham may have helped cut the number of burglary-related home insurance claims made in the town this year.Greater Manchester Police claimed a three-month campaign has seen break-ins drop by 27 per cent in the first quarter of 2009, compared with the same period in 2008.
They explained officers have been doing everything within their power to catch prolific offenders, including increasing patrols and targeting second-hand shops.
Since January 2nd, 93 warrants have been executed as a result of the initiative and 117 suspects have been arrested.
One group of six offenders have been handed a total jail sentence of 21 years and three months.
Superintendent Chris Sykes said: "Tackling burglary is a priority for the Oldham division."
He continued: "We started 2009 as we mean to go on, sending a clear message that there is no place for criminals in Oldham."
In related news, Greater Manchester Police recently arrested 13 suspected burglars in Stockport.
